“Hosanna” – Save Us, Jesus!

Palm Sunday is the day we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. It was the “beginning of the end” of Jesus’ work on earth. This day looked totally different in comparison to what a few short days ahead would look like.

Close your eyes and imagine the streets of Jerusalem. It was probably filled with anticipation and excitement as crowds gathered to welcome Jesus. Here He comes, not on a majestic horse as one might expect for a king, but riding on a humble donkey. Do you think people were surprised to see the expected king riding in on a donkey? Jesus' journey into the city is met with cheers and shouts of joy, as people wave palm branches and lay their cloaks on the ground, creating a makeshift carpet of adoration.

In this moment, Jesus embodies both triumph and humility. He is hailed as a king, fulfilling ancient prophecies (Zechariah 9:9), yet His manner of arrival speaks volumes about His character. Instead of seeking majesty and war with the Romans for the freedom of the Jews, He chooses simplicity and peace. His choice of transportation may seem unconventional to us for a king, but it perfectly illustrates his message of humility, servanthood—but also of kingship, just as Solomon was anointed king and entered Jerusalem on a mule.

On that first Palm Sunday, “the crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’...‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’...‘Hosanna in the highest heaven!’” (Matthew 21:9)

Each person had their own hopes and expectations, their own reasons for welcoming Jesus into their midst. The people thought that Jesus was coming to save them from their troubles and problems (“Hosanna” means “save us!”), but we know that Jesus came to save us from much more than just problems or the Roman occupation in Judea during Jesus’ time.

There is a deeper significance to Palm Sunday that often goes unnoticed. Jesus knows what awaits him in the days to come – betrayal, rejection, and, ultimately, death on a cross. Yet, He willingly continues on this journey, driven by love and obedience to His Father’s will.

As we reflect on Palm Sunday, let’s reflect on the emotions and experiences of those in the crowd. Imagine the joy and hope that fills their hearts as they catch a glimpse of Jesus. Some may be seeking a political savior, hoping for deliverance from Roman oppression. Others may be drawn to Jesus because of His miracles, longing for physical or spiritual healing. Each person brings their own desires and expectations to the moment, eager for the fulfillment of their hopes and dreams.

But Jesus offers something far greater than temporary relief or earthly power. He offers Himself – His love, His grace, His very life. And He invites us to follow in His footsteps, embracing humility and selflessness in our own lives.

In a world that often values success, power, and recognition above all else, Palm Sunday challenges us to redefine what it means to be truly great. So as we journey through Holy Week, let’s pause to reflect on the example set by Jesus on Palm Sunday. Let’s remember His humility, His compassion, and His unwavering commitment to God’s will. And let’s strive to emulate His example in our own lives, walking humbly and serving faithfully wherever we go.
